Charge it, slide in a card, press go. There’s nothing to set up and nothing to scan. We only sell the card-insert type, because almost every “it won’t draw” complaint we read was about the scan-type ones. If yours won’t draw, email us — a real person replies within one business day — and the 12-Month Keeps Drawing Promise covers it.

It goes first, one step at a time, so your child can see how a picture gets built: a long oval, then a nose, then the fins. After each step it’s their turn — copy it on their own page, then press the button for the next one. The robot is the model. The drawing that ends up on the fridge is theirs.

That gap — between the picture in their head and the one on the page — is what causes the scrunched-up paper. This gives them something to copy, as many times as they like, with nobody sighing. The first rocket is usually wobbly. The fourth one isn’t, and they’ll want you to see it.

It’s made for ages 3 and up. Three- and four-year-olds mostly watch it and colour the drawing in. Five- and six-year-olds copy it step by step. From seven, they copy the detailed cards and start adding their own ideas, and there’s no top end: the cards just get harder. It isn’t suitable for under-3s: small parts.

There are 100 different cards, and every picture can be copied, coloured and changed. Our free Drawing Club email also sends a new drawing challenge each week, so there’s always a next card.

If it stops drawing in its first 12 months of normal use, we send you a new one. Usually we won’t even need the old one back — a short video of what it’s doing is enough.

There are 14 markers in the box, so you have spares from day one: two black ones for the robot and twelve colours for colouring in. They’re ordinary water-based washable markers, so when they eventually dry out, any washable marker from the newsagent that fits the holder will do. The cards are sturdy and double-sided; if one goes walkabout, email us and we’ll sort it out.

It’s a small motor moving a pen, so you’ll hear a soft whirr while it draws and not much else. It runs on its own rechargeable battery, so it works on a café table or Nan’s kitchen bench without a power point. Pop it and a few cards in a bag with a sheet of paper.

It’s a rechargeable toy for ages 3 and up, with a lithium battery: charge it with an adult nearby, and not overnight on a bed. The markers are water-based and washable. The cable is included; there’s no plug, and any phone charger works.

Fair question. It arrives gift-ready with no prices in the box, it works straight out of the box with nothing to set up, and there are 100 cards to get through — which is why it tends to stay on the table instead of going in the cupboard.
